가을에 어울리는 재즈

  길을 걸으며 땅에 떨어진 은행 열매를 피하려고 고개를 숙여야 하는 계절이 다가왔습니다.

  은행 열매를 피하느라 고개를 계속 숙이고만 다니다가 문득 고개를 들어보니 서울 시내의 가로수잎에도 색이 바래기 시작하는 것이 조만간 낙엽이 쌓일 것 같습니다. 이런 계절에는 역시 재즈가 듣고 싶어집니다.

 In A Sentimental Mood는 1935년에 듀크 엘링턴 Duke Ellington이 작곡한 연주곡이었는데, 가사는 나중에 Manny Kurtz가 붙이게 되면서 연주곡과 재즈 보컬곡으로 유명해진 곡입니다. 이 곡은 1963년에 재즈 색소폰 연주자인 존 콜트레인과 함께 녹음한 버전이 제일 유명하지만, 가을 저녁에 듣기에는 캐나다 출신의 재즈 보컬인 헤일리 로렌 Halie Loren의 목소리로 듣는 'In A Sentimental Mood'가 더 마음에 듭니다.

  빌 에반스가 4살이 된 자신의 조카를 보고 영감을 얻어 지은 곡이라고 알려진 'Waltz for Debby'입니다. 빌 에반스 트리오 Bill Evans Trio의 앨범 'Waltz for Debby'에 실려 있는 오리지널 곡이 제일 유명하지만, 오늘은 캐논볼 애덜리의 색소폰과 함께 연주하는 버전이 생각이 나서 추천해봅니다.

  니나 시몬이 애절한 목소리로 부르는 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'는 벨기에가 낳은 샹송의 대부인 쟈크 브렐이 1959년에 처음으로 불렀던 노래입니다. 영어로 번역하면 'Don't Leave Me'라는 뜻이 됩니다만, 로드 매퀸이 'If You Go Away'라는 제목으로 번역해서 부르면서 더욱 많이 알려진 노래입니다. 제가 들어본 버전 중에서는 니나 시몬의 목소리가 제일 애절하고 절절하게 느껴집니다.

Danny Boy - 해리 코닉 주니어 Harry Connick, Jr

  2차 세계대전 당시 활약했던 B-17 폭격기 부대를 배경으로 만든 전쟁영화인 '멤피스 벨 Memphis Belle'에서 출격 전날 부르던 해리 코닉 주니어가 부르던 'Danny Boy'가 가끔 생각나곤 합니다. 원곡인 'Danny Boy'는 아일랜드의 민요에 가사를 붙인 곡이라고 하는데, 해리코닉
