아침부터 울적해지게 만들었던 노래, Carole King의 You've Got A Friend

  아침에 일어나서 이런저런 준비를 하는 동안 주로 음악을 듣는 편인데, 예전에는 CD를 틀었지만 요즘은 주로 유튜브의 음악 채널을 즐겨 듣는 편입니다. 그중 기타 연주를 주로 올리는 채널이 하나 있는데, 며칠 전 아침에 그 채널을 듣다가 갑자기 기분이 이상해졌습니다.

  흘러나오던 곡은 제임스 테일러 James Taylor의 You've Got A Friend를 기타 커버 버전으로 편곡한 것이었는데, 저도 모르게 가사가 떠오르면서 살짝 울적해졌습니다.

  이 노래는 제임스 테일러 James Taylor의 노래로 더 잘 알려져 있는데, 저는 캐롤 킹의 목소리가 더 좋습니다.

 

  "You've Got A Friend"는 1971년, 비슷한 시기에 캐롤 킹 Carole King의 앨범 <Tapestry>와 제임스 테일러 James Taylor의 앨범 <Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon>에서 발표했는데, 제임스 테일러의 앨범에 실린 버전이 빌보드 차트 1위, 영국 싱글 차트에서 4위를 기록하게 됩니다.  제임스 테일러가 이 노래를 캐롤 킹과 거의 같은 시기에 싣게 된 계기는 캐롤 킹이 이 곡을 작곡하던 시기에 같은 녹음실을 쓰던 제임스 테일러가 이 노래를 듣고 너무 마음에 들어서 싣게 되었다는 얘기가 있습니다. 공교롭게도 두 가수가 거의 같은 시기에 각자의 앨범에 수록하면서 캐롤 킹이 제임스 테일러를 위해 작곡했다는 오해에 대해서, 1972년에 캐롤 킹이 미국의 공영방송인 PBS와의 인터뷰에서 "didn't write it with James or anybody really specifically in mind. But when James heard it he really liked it and wanted to record it 제임스나 다른 누구를 염두에 두고 쓴 곡이 아니다. 그렇지만 제임스는 이 곡을 듣고 정말 좋아했고, 녹음하고 싶어 했다"라고 인터뷰를 했습니다.

  신종 코로나가 퍼지기 시작한 지 1년이 넘어가면서  사회적 거리 두기가 장기화되면서 '코로나 블루(Corona Blues)'까지 합쳐지면서 더 우울한 느낌이 들었는지도 모르겠습니다.
